Birthdays are difficult. What do you get for a 10 year old girl and a 15 (possibly 16?) year old boy? Particularly when you don't see them often enough to know everything they already own, or their most recent obsession. I refuse to buy the one thing I know will be appreciated - anything with the word "Bratz" on it. Philosophical and moral objections.
I could do an entire blog post on Bratz dolls. But I really can't be bothered.
Can anybody help me with birthday present suggestions?

Ask them! Be subtle if you can, or just plain outright: worst case is they'll know you really want to give them something they will appreciate. Don't get hung up on a big 'ta-daa' moment; and - as I've found for younger kin - treble whatever you think you want to spend. Really.
Good tip, Pete! I'll have a search in the area I work today, and if nothing jumps out at me I will ASK!
I would get them a gift voucher from a shopping centre and put it in a card, that way they can put it towards something they like or something they need.
Cazzie - gift vouchers always seem so impersonal! They're sometimes appropriate, but I don't like giving them... hopefully I won't have to resort to that! :)
Got one sorted, one to go:)
My nieces are 10 years old and I gave them those make-it-yourself costume jewelry kits last Christmas. I've found that craft related kits -- painting kits, stamp kits, make-your-own-stickers kits are also a hit.
I just bought her pressie! It's a lovely pink floating candle set - with a glass bowl, the little glass beads to go in the bottom, and 4 pink candles. She loves pink.
Fair enough, In would get the girl an age appropriate book and a skipping rope to get outside and play with friends. I would get the boy an age appropriate book or a ticket to go see that Motorcross Event happening in June here in Melbourne.
I always buy books, no matter what age a kid is.
Looking back, I see u brought her all pink things she likes, way to go.
