An American journalist has referred to the late Heath Ledger as selfish, reckless, and greedy. So Australians have bombarded her newspaper with protest. Patriotism strikes again. Seriously, who cares? There's no doubt that he was a good actor, and he was mildly attractive (more so when he was younger, I think). But as to his character traits, who cares? He's gone now and can't possibly care what anybody says about him. I can't help but notice that most of the things being said in public are said by people who never actually knew him personally. Maybe he was selfish, maybe he wasn't. Why does it matter now? Let his family lay him to rest in peace; the people who truly loved him don't need to hear the whole world's uninformed opinions.

mildly attractive? Surely you say this in jest whilst rolling around on the floor drooling about his gorgeous face.

Still haven't got over the loss...

:(

Do i have a right to care? This is troubling...

haha Fathorse, he's not really my type. Now, if it were Johnny Depp we were talking about, that would get me drooling... *droooools*...

I don't know if we have the right to care. Feeling an attachment to somebody we've never known in any personal way is a symptom of modern life and the media, and somehow it doesn't seem right to me. I am a bit anti-celebrity, to be honest. People get so worried about actors or royalty or whoever the magazines are on about this week, and it just bugs me.

Mourn the loss of an actor, since that's how we all knew him. But perhaps we should leave the mourning of a real person to his family.

I don't like celebrity-gossip culture, but there are certain 'celebrity' figures I feel a strong bond to - they become fictional characters in many ways, and if you cry at books or movies I don't see why you can't mourn the loss of the person you thought you knew so long as it doesn't take over your life/other lives or get in the way of the people who are mourning the real person you never knew. That would just be creepy and psychotic. It is the gossip culture we have today that spurs people on to make incriminating public judgments of these characters as though they are describing the real person. I think that's the psychotic side of celebrity.

hmm, I don't think that made any sense, what I said... :-/

You make a good point when you compare celebs to characters in books... I'm notorious when it comes to crying at sad books! Maybe we do have a right to mourn Heath Ledger... in a quiet, non-intrusive kind of way :) I guess my main problem was the way so many people have gone public and gotten really upset at something negative being said about him, when it's not the place of people who didn't know him to defend his character. I don't really know if that makes sense, either! So what's new... haha

I so agree! All we REALLY know abt Heath was that he was a fine actor. Thats abt it. We hv no right to comment on his personality.

RIP Heath!
